The summer transfer news of 2016 was the most expensive one we have ever had . In total, Premier League clubs spent £1.1 billion on transfers this summer shattering all the football transfers records. As a Red Devil’s Fan, I’m particularly very happy with this transfer window, as ours was probably the best out of all the clubs. Many big deals went through during this transfer window with 13 of the 20 teams breaking their club transfer records. Pogba came back to Manchester United from Juventus on the most expensive transfers record deal, while John Stones joined Manchester City for £50m. The return of David Luiz to Stamford Bridge proved that this summer was all about homecoming 🙂
Deadline day also brought a couple of unexpected surprise when Joe Hart left Manchester City to join Serie A side Torino, and Jack Wilshere being loaned to Bournemouth by Arsene Wenger. In the past we have seen some expected changes, some unpredictable, and some record breaking ones.
This transfer season was clearly a record breaking one, but let’s have a look at the top 9 most expensive football transfer news of all time.
9) Kevin De Bruyne (2015)
Kevin de Bruyne was roped in by Manchester City from Wolfsburg on a six-year contract for a club record fee of £55 million making him the 3rd most expensive transfer in British football history. The record transfer news came after a wonderful performance by de Bruyne in the 2014-15 campaign. In the 2014-15 season playing for Wolfsburg, Kevin broke all the assist records with 27 assists and netted 16 goals to win the 2015 footballer of the year in Germany. He also made it to that year’s 23rd man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or.
8) Angel Di Maria (2014)
£59.7 millions – the tag of the highest fee ever paid by a British club (before POGBA came back of course :p duh!)
As Di Maria stepped into the Theatre of Dreams wearing the legendary no. 7 in the colors of the Red Devil’s. Oh! What a sight that was. I was really excited and surprised when I first heard this transfer news. I believed that he was too good of a player to let go by Real Madrid, but indeed was very happy when Louis Van Gaal managed to get him to Manchester in-spite of the fact the United were not in the Champions League.
Di Maria signed a five-years deal with Manchester United and he started of great. But Van Gaal is known for his experiments as he wanted Angel to play more of a winger role which turned out to be bad for him. The change came with a bad run of form and injury, nothing went right for United that season. Just after completing one year, Di Maria was sold to Paris Saint-Germain for a undisclosed fee approximately around 44 million Pounds. Since then he is doing really well for the french side!
7) James Rodriguez (2014)
James Rodriguez is hardly an unfamiliar name to us. He is commonly ranked as the best young player in the world and often compared to his fellow compatriot and Colombian legendary footballer Carlos Valderrama. James is known for his awesome play-making skills and techniques. He has played for clubs like Banfield, Porto and Monaco before signing a record deal with Real Madrid in 2014. Rodriguez signed a six-year contract with Madrid for £63 Million. This move made him the most expensive Colombian till date surpassing Radamel Falcao’s £51 million transfer in 2013.
6) Luis Suarez (2014)
Luis Suarez is a Uruguayan international world class striker who plays for FC Barcelona. He first came into the limelight in the 2010 Word Cup quarter final match against Ghana where he deliberately blocked the opponents header with his hand in his last attempt to save his team when the score was tied 1-1. This led to a direct red card and a penalty. While Suarez was sent off, Asamoah Gyan stepped up to take the penalty but could not score under pressure. The match went into penalties and Uruguay eventually won 4-2. Apart from this controversy, Luis is also known to bite people during the games :p :p
His record transfer news came in July 2014, where he signed five year contract with Barcelona for a whooping fee of £64.98 million. Before his move to Barca, he has a wonderful season with Liverpool (2013-14) where he was awarded Player of the Year. At present, with Lionel Messi and Neymar, he makes one of the world’s most formidable attacking combination.
5) Neymar (2013)
Neymar Jr ( Neymar da Silva Santos Junior) is a Brazilian International Striker who plays for Barcelona. He is an exceptional talent and is often compared to the greatest footballer ever i.e. PELE. Both of them come from the same background and started their carriers in the same Club – Santos. His record transfer deal came in 2013 where he signed a five-year deal with Barcelona for £71.5 Million.
Prior to this transfer, Neymar had already made a mark on the football world by winning many reputed awards such as Puskas Awards in 2011, South America’s best player in 2012 etc. Later on, Neymar came in third position for the FIFA Ballon d’Or in 2015 competing with the likes of Ronaldo and his fellow Barca teammate Lionel Messi).
4) Gonzalo Huguain (2016)
Gonzalo Higuain world record transfer news came in July 2016 after months of speculations. Italian side Napoli agreed for a £73.5 million transfer fee from Juventus. With this, he became one of the most expensive player in the world and highest transfer ever for an Italian club. Earlier, he had played for clubs like Napoli, Real Madrid and River Plate.
3) Cristiano Ronaldo (2009)
This man needs no introduction. Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro – he is without a doubt the best in the business. Ronaldo being third in this list is probably a unexpected surprise, but nevertheless he tops the list of Forbes World Highest-Paid Athletes.
Ronaldo started his club career with Sporting before Sir Alex Ferguson signed him for Manchester United in 2008. He was only 18 at that time but took no time in making his mark at Old Trafford. Ronaldo has a successful run during his time in England where he helped United win 3 premier league tittles, 1 Champions League Tittle, and 1 club world club tittle.
His childhood dream of playing for Real Madrid came true when the Spanish giants successfully acquired him for a world record transfer fee of £80 million. It was the biggest transfer news at that time. It was a real heartbreak for United fans, but a talent like him cannot be contained in one place. Ronaldo has a huge fan following and rightly so – check out his honors portfolio and records.

The transformation story of Gareth Frank Bale from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid is really inspiring. Bale is known for his tremendous speed and powerful ball striking. He is probably one of the fastest footballer today, and he has displayed his strength on many big occasions. Bale started his club career in the premier league at Southampton when he was just 16 years of age. Tottenham Hotspur signed him in 2007 and under the guidance of Harry Redknapp he became an integral part of the team. He came out to be an amazing attacking player scoring some amazing goals during his stay in England. Bale signed for Real Madrid on September 2013 on a six-year deal for £85.3 million. He has made 83 appearance for Real Madrid and scored 49 Goals in all competition.
1) Paul Pogba (2016)
The biggest transfer news in the history of football. Paul Labile Pogba – the talk of the town, the most expensive footballer ever. The French International has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford and has become Jose Mourinho 4th major signing for this summer. After months and months of speculations and teasing – Pogba finally returned to Manchester United for an amazing amount of £89.3 million that puts him ahead of Bale and Ronaldo.
Pogba began his club career from Manchester United in 2011. In 2012 he joined Italian side Juventus and helped them win four consecutive Serie A tittles, Two Coppa Italia and Two Supercoppa Italiana titles.
Despite leaving United for a free transfer, he returned on a world record transfer fee. Return of the King Indeed !!!
